BEDA, the British Entertainment and Discotheque Association, has made a major attack on the government's licensing reform proposals, saying that Britain's drink yob culture will be fuelled by the liberalisation of opening hours.

BEDA believes that special nightclub licences are needed and that no single qualification can cover the needs of both pubs and nightclubs. It demands that pubs that wish to open late should be forced to have the same level of security as a nightclub, such as CCTV and registered doormen.

Steve Thomas, chairman of BEDA and chief executive of Luminar Leisure, says that the government working party looking at reform has no representation from his industry, but has representation from the BLRA and Local Government Association.

BEDA represents 800 nightclub and discos across the country.
