VAT cut campaigner Jacques Borel has said he’s targeting 248 of the 649 MPs in Parliament to garner support for the tax to be reduced and restated his confidence that a cut is “achievable” by next April.

Writing in the campaign’s publication VAT Club Jacques Borel Gazette, Borel said he has increased his working hours to 90 a week, as he divides his time between his two priorities of lobbying and updating or recruiting new members.

“Each meeting completed brings with it new action points and more contacts to be made. We now have 248 target MPs (out of 649 members) which means 248 letters sent and 191 initial contacts made. In fact, my executive assistant estimates that over 400 telephone calls have been made and over 800 e-mails sent – and this is only the beginning.

“I am pleased to say that all of these efforts are not in vain. We have had a number of very successful and fruitful meetings with MPs and other government officials and are in regular contact with HM Treasury.

“We have a full programme of meetings confirmed with MPs over the coming weeks and a significant number of new members to see. I remain confident that a VAT cut is achievable for April 2015 and am determined to continue to devote all of my time and energy to that end.”
