Starbucks has announced it will raise wages for workers across its US stores from October.

Pay will be increased by 5% to 15% under the changes announced by chief executive Howard Schultz yesterday.

Starbucks has faced criticism recently for cutting staff hours, and raising prices to meet profit expectations.

In a letter to employees Schultz said the company was looking to ‘strike a balance’ between profit and social responsibility.

The coffee chain is also doubling the amount of stock it distributes to hourly employees, who have worked for the company for at least two years.
