Howard Schultz, the chief executive of Starbucks, has said the company will roll out its Mobile Order & Pay technology into its international markets in the next few months.

He said the company was already seeing a huge boost from the technology thanks to its expansion across the American estate and is on track to complete the US rollout in time for the holiday season.

Schultz also said the company plans to open another express store in New York and to pilot delivery to homes and offices in Seattle and in the Empire State Building in New York City before the holiday.

In the third quarter to 28 June, Starbucks saw global like-for-like sales rise 7%. US like-for-like sales rose 8% with a 3% rise in Europe.

Schultz said he US performance had been driven by a 4% increase in traffic.

He said: “Let me put that 4% traffic increase figure into perspective. A 4% increase in global traffic on a business of our scale translates into having served over 23 million more customer occasions in Q3 of 2015 than in Q3 of 2014 or an average of approximately 25 more customer occasions every day from every single store in our nearly 10,000 store global comp base.”

Schultz said technology was driving growth in the My Starbucks Rewards scheme, which now has 10.4 million members, up 28% from Q3 2014 with 6.2 million being Gold members, up 32% from Q3 last year.

Schultz said: “The significant increase in Gold level membership means that an increased number of our MSR customers are transacting in our stores more frequently than before with MSR members now accounting for approximately 30% of total tender in North America.”

He also said the company had reached the milestone of mobile payments representing 20% of all in-store transactions in its US stores, more than double the figure from only two years ago, with nearly 9 million mobile transactions being processed each week.

Starbucks opened 431 net new stores in the quarter with total store count reaching 22,519. Year on year comparable store customer transactions increased nearly 18 million in the US and over 23 million globally.
