A poll of grab and go products sold over the past year has shown a decline in popularity of the sandwich thanks to a boom in hot food sales.

The research by packaging producer Planglow, based on sales of its packaged products between April 2015 and March 2016, showed that while the sandwich remains the king of grab and go its market share fell 6% over the year while hot foods increased 2.4% from around one in every 16 items purchased to nearly one in 12.

The research also showed hot drink sales had risen, increasing their market share from 8% to 10%.

The market share of salads fell 3% on the previous year, so that salads now amount to just one in 40 grab and go purchases.

Planglow also revealed that 46% of sandwiches sold in the period were baguettes.
