The number of Indian restaurants in the UK fell by 4.2% in the year to June, while the number of Chinese eating establishments dropped 5.4%, accorrding to new figures.

The latest quarterly Market Growth Monitor from CGA Peach and AlixPartners, shows a contrasting picture for American restaurants, which grew in site numbers by 14.6% year-on-year, although still only number 1,282 compared to the 6,054 Indian restaurants and 2,585 Chinese.

The data shows Italian restaurants remained relatively stable, growing 0.7% year-on-year.

Looking at the picture over a five-year period, Indian restaurants have grown 19.8% in site numbers, Italians are up 28.9%, Chinese up 4.4% and American venues up 92.5%.
