The dinner day-part has seen its occasion share decline by 1.4ppts year-on-year, in the four weeks to 19 March 2023, according to the latest Lumina Intelligence Eating and Drinking Out Panel data.

Its decline, which has benefited all other day parts, has partly been put down to the recovery in day-time occasions with more consumers eating out, as well as efforts by consumers to reduce out of home occasions at the most expensive day-part.

The re-alignment of day-part shares has impacted average spend growth year-on-year, with spend growth of +2.6% - notably behind inflation figures, Lumina noted.

Alongside the decline in dinner’s share of occasions, the restaurant channel has also seen its share of occasions declining, by 0.8ppts year-on-year, with operators failing to attract a notable boost for Mother’s Day 2023.

The snapshot data update also revealed that weekly eating and drinking out frequency has declined by 6.7% year-on-year – slightly less than the -7% decline recorded for the previous four weeks.
