Diners are creatures of habit according to a new survey which shows that 98% of people regularly visit the same restaurants when eating out and 3.8m Brits only ever visit the same restaurant.

The survey, carried out by restaurant reservation app Uncover showed that fear of not being able to get a table or having to wait a long time at new restaurants put 76% of respondents off trying somewhere different.

Women were found to be less likely to visit the same eateries although men eat out more frequently than women with mal respondents saying they are twice as likely to eat out more than three times a week.

The results show that 30% of Scots regularly visit as few as two restaurants with 76% citing the guarantee of a table or fear of having to wait as reasons to stick to their favourite restaurants.

Welsh diners are more adventurous with 40% visiting at least three restaurants regularly and 10% visit the same restaurant every time they eat out.

People in the west Midlands were found to have the least adventurous eating habits with one third admitting to regularly going back to same restaurants time and time again.

People in London are the most likely to eat out at least three times a week, closely followed by people in the north west.

In London long waiting lists for tables and fear of not getting a table without booking put off more than 10% of diners off trying a new restaurant.

Christopher Steinau, co-founder at Uncover said: “It’s easy to understand why so many people visit the same restaurant every time they eat out, there’s just so much on offer it can sometimes be overwhelming. If people want to discover the latest restaurant or find out what else is out there, they need to make a concerted effort to be spontaneous and explore new things.”

Uncover is a new app that allows restaurant goers to discover and book London restaurants at the last minute. It is available to download now for iPhone with an Android version due for release in early 2015.
