New research has shown that 42% of consumers do not trust the meat served to them in restaurants while 83% are dubious about what is served to them in takeaways.

A poll by YouGov showed that supermarkets are stealing a lead on dining out with 70% of respondents saying they trusted the meat bought over the counter.

The National Pig Association (NPA), which released the data, said it showed the importance of provenance for consumers.

NPA chief executive Dr Zoe Davies said: “All the evidence shows customers want British meat because they trust its provenance and its quality, and they are even prepared to pay a bit more for it, just as they do in supermarkets.

“So when restaurants and fast-food outlets make a point of sourcing British, they should always say so on their menus and in their advertising, and if they do, this new research shows their customers will respond positively.”
