Eco-friendly French vineyards are trying to reduce their carbon footprint by exporting their wine on sailing ships. Sixty thousand bottles will be shipped from Languedoc to Ireland later this month on a 19th century barque, saving 18,375lb of carbon. Further voyages are planned to Bristol, Manchester and even Canada. Tesco has already taken 50 lorries off the road every week by carrying wine 40 miles on canal barges from Liverpool to a bottling site in Manchester. The Observer 24/02/08 page 41
