Diageo is still set to axe 500 jobs despite plans by the Scottish government to offer the drinks group a greenfield site in Kilmarnock in a bid to keep jobs in the town. It is understood that the government is prepared to offer Diageo a new greenfield site at no cost that will be used to build a new bottling plant, according to reports in The Sunday Times. The Scottish government, however, is believed to have conceded that despite the proposals 140 jobs will still be lost at the Port Dundas distillery in Glasgow and a further 360 will go at Diageo’s other Scottish packaging plants. Diageo previously announced that it was looking to reduce labour costs by axing 900 jobs at plants in Kilmarnock and Glasgow.
