Moonshine whiskey is being sold at $4 (£2.80) a shot in bars in the West Virginia town of Morganstown.

Payton Fireman has got state and federal licences allowing him to distil the corn mash malt and yeast liquor.

And already he is looking to expand into Britain. He says he would love to talk to distillers over here.

The moonshine boasts a scorching kick, followed by a faintly bitter after-taste.

But Fireman, 44, admits it is not the smoothest of drinks. It is moonshine after all, he says.

Traditional Appalachian Mountains moonshine was originally made by Ulster Protestant settlers.

They found it easier to trade than the surplus grain from which it was made.
