Roadchef has now closed all its restaurant units and put 1,000 staff on furlough.

The motorway service station operator said the national lockdown had led to traffic at historic low levels, and only haulage, emergency services and other essential users on the road.

The sites are still open 24/7 but with a much reduced service, with toilets and extended free parking.

CEO Mark Fox said: “We are grateful for the government support as the alternatives wouldn’t have borne thinking about. We’re still operating 24/7 in all our locations with a much reduced offer

“Hats off to our amazing teams who are keeping things going despite all of the challenges and I’m thankful we have big amenity buildings so social distancing isn’t too much of an issue either at present. Things are tough but we’re sticking at it.”
