Pret a Manger will launch its plastic bottle deposit scheme in three Brighton shops next month (7 April) following “fantastic” customer feedback.

Having asked customers to feedback on its idea of adding 10p to all plastic bottles and returning 10p for each bottle given back to teams to recycle last month, Pret received over 7,000 responses.

Pret has decided to launch the trial in Brighton Station, 42 East Street and 77 North Street next month, after 80% of respondents claimed it was “a good idea”, with many reportedly also suggesting upping the deposit.

In his blog post, chief executive Clive Schlee said: “The aim is to understand how many bottles are returned and to see if it encourages more customers to opt for a reusable bottle. Pret will of course reinvest any unclaimed deposits in future sustainability work.

“We’ve chosen Brighton because Pret has three busy shops there and we know the local people are highly attuned to the environment. If it is successful, we could extend the scheme across the country during the autumn of 2018.”
