McDonald's is to hire 4,000 new staff as part of a recruitment drive to take advantage of consumers trading down in the wake of the economic crisis. The recruitment, which will increase the size of McDonald's 67,000-strong UK workforce by 6% Nick Hindle, a spokesman for McDonald's in the UK, said the company needed to hire the extra staff to keep pace with the increased footfall in its restaurants, longer opening hours and expansion in the UK. As many as 600 jobs will be created following the launch of 10 new sites across the country, the company added UK sales at McDonald's were up by at least 10% in the first half as the company took market share from its rivals, Mr Hindle said. McDonald's UK chief executive, Steve Easterbrook, said the company was proving to be "more recession resistant than many" in the face of "choppy economic waters". The company has been pushing through a refurbishment of its UK stores in an effort to improve its image. Menus have been improved and free Wi-Fi installed, while the company is also on track to complete a £40m investment across 200 Drive Thru restaurants by the end of 2008.
