Laurel Pub Company, the bar group owned by R20, has killed off Sam & Maxies, the American bar, grill and smokehouse concept. The three-strong format was a fledgling format that it acquired as part of £124m purchase of La Tasca Group earlier this year. Two of three Sam & Maxies restaurants - at Milton Keynes and the Trafford Centre, Manchester - have been converted to ha ha bar & grill. The third, at Stevenage, has been sold to Prezzo, the listed casual dining firm. Paul Symonds, Laurel's chief operating officer, said the group was focusing on its core growth-driving brands of Ha Ha, La Tasca and Slug & Lettuce. He told M&C: "We have to operate as a very focused organisation, trying to do a few things tremendously well. "There is still plenty of growth in the market for the established brands we operate." Symonds said the customer reaction to the converted Ha Ha outlets had been very encouraging. He said the Stevenage site was sold because of its very competitive trading environment and after the group decided its efforts were better deployed elsewhere. R20, Robert Tchenguiz's investment vehicle, is thought to be considering an IPO of its food-led bar and restaurant businesses.
