Greggs and Pret a Manger have topped a consumer poll for providing the best customer experience for coffee shops, with Toby Carvery being named favourite in the pub restaurant space and Bella Italia, Nando’s, Pizza Express and Pret a Manger all joint top in the fast-casual / quick service restaurant sector.

The survey by customer intelligence provider Market Force Information showed that 43% of consumers are highly satisfied with their coffee experience while 10% said they are dissatisfied. While customers claimed to be equally satisfied at both fast service restaurants and pub/bar style restaurants with 36% and 35% at each claiming to be very satisfied while 17% said they are less than satisfied at each.

The survey was based on satisfaction and how likely a consumer is to recommend the coffee shop or restaurant to others.

Consumers rated Pret a Manger top of seven of eight categories including friendliness of staff, overall cleanliness, food quality, speed of service, curb appeal of the outside restaurant, atmosphere and availability of healthy food options. While Greggs came out top for value received for money spent and second for friendliness of staff, speed of service, and store cleanliness. They were ahead of Caffe Nero with 39% of loyalty vote, Costa Coffee (38%) and Starbucks (38%).

Pret a Manger also came joint top of a poll of quick service and fast-casual restaurants which placed rated it tied with Bella Italia, Nando’s and Pizza Express for customer satisfaction.

Toby Carvery was named the number one pub/ bar style restaurant on the loyalty index with 43% of consumers favouring the brand above JD Wetherspoon (37%); Brewers Fayre (34%) and Hungry Horse (27%).

The survey asked 4,500 consumers aged 18 and over their favourite brands across the pub, restaurant and coffee shop sectors which showed that in the past 90 days 10% of people have visited a pub/bar style restaurant more than 10 times and c12% made just one visit to a pub/bar style restaurant.

The data was averaged to rate each brand on a Composite Loyalty Index that listed the most favoured choice for coffee shops, restaurants and pub/bar restaurants based on scores across the categories.
