Clapham House Group has reported a maiden full-year pre-tax profit before exceptionals of £1.1m, against a loss of £400,000 in the same period last year. Full year pre-tax profit was £700,000, against a loss of £600,000 in 2005. Following the £25.4m acquisition of Urban Dining, the group currently has net debt of around £3.1m. The company recently agreed terms for a £19m bank debt facility to fund its expansion. Turnover at the group, which owns the Gourmet Burger Kitchen, Tootsies, The Bombay Bicycle Club and The Real Greek brands, increased by 132% to £17.3m for the 12 months to 31 March. The company built its estate by 61% from 18 to 29 sites during the year, comprising of 11 Gourmet Burger Kitchen, 13 Bombay Bicycle Club, and seven Real Greek sites. The group said that it was looking at up to 100 potential UK locations for its Gourmet Burger Kitchen brand, including 60 locations in London, and some 30 towns and cities across the country. A similar list is being drawn up for The Bombay Bicycle Club. The company is currently in negotiations for more than 10 additional sites for Gourmet Burger Kitchen, and in total more than 15 including the other brands. The group’s international franchisee in the Middle East will open its first Gourmet Burger Kitchen restaurant in Kuwait later this month and has identified a number of other properties for the brand in Dubai. Pre-opening costs in the year were £437,000, including £85,000 incurred at two new Gourmet Burger Kitchen sites in Kingston, which has opened, and Brighton, which is due to open this week. Since the acquisition of Urban Dining in May, the group has sold one Tootsies restaurant, which was loss making, and opened another in Hemel Hempstead. The company also confirmed it had completed its review of the 30-strong Tootsies estate and has started a conversion and refurbishment programme. It expects to open the first two conversions from Tootsies to GBK by the autumn, by which time it also plans to have relaunched two refurbished Tootsies sites. A new Tootsies restaurant is due to be opened in Brent Cross shopping centre later in the year. The company said that trading in its new financial year had started well, with the integration of Urban Dining well underway. The group said that it was confident of its result for the current year.
