Bespoke catering firm Ampersand, which is part of the CH&Co group that also owns Apostrophe cafes, has secured a contract with the British Golf Museum in St Andrews to open the first café at the site.

The new café is due to be ready ahead of the 144th Open Championship to be held at St Andrews from 16 July 2015.

The café will have 78 covers indoors and a further 60 outside on an adjoining terrace that overlooks the Bandstand and the sea. The menu will comprise of Scottish cuisine produced by local suppliers, with barista coffee, cakes and snacks available as well as hot meals.

It will be added to the upper level of the museum and will provide views of The Royal and Ancient Clubhouse, the 1st tee of the Old Course and the West Sands beach.

The contract is projected initially to turnover £450k and upwards annually - initially for three years, with the option of a two year extension.

Angela Howe, Director of the British Golf Museum, said: “the café extension and redesign of the museum entrance, reception and shop is a new chapter in the museum’s history. It is the most significant development to take place since the museum opened in 1990. Ampersand’s track record with museums and its commitment to source produce locally were important in influencing our decision”.

The venue will be available for standalone evening events in addition to the golfing events and outside of the museum opening hours.

Ampersand managing director Paul Jackson said the appointment demonstrates the group’s growing strength outside its south east heartland where it has a reputation at museums.

Its existing contracts include The Palace of Holyroodhouse, Compton Verney Art Gallery, the Museum of London Docklands Hampton Court Palace, ZSL London Zoo, The Guildhall, The Tower of London, The Law Society, Kensington Palace, and The Royal Institute of British Architects.
