The Winemakers Club, the wine bar and retail business, has opened a second site in Deptford, which includes a restaurant for the first time, MCA has learnt.

Owner-director John Baum said the new food offer would be classic, with bar snacks, as well as English and Italian style cuisine, such as whole-cooked fish and rib of beef.

Baum, who has worked as a supplier, sommelier and seller took on the specialist business from his father Frederick, and offers lesser-known and rarer wines directly from winemakers.

The business, which opened its first site in Holborn in 2014, also supplies wine to restaurants such as Fera, Restaurant Storey, Kiln and Lyle’s.

Baum said he moved into bars and food in order to diversify the business in an increasingly competitive environment.

He said: “It made a lot of senses for us and a way for the company to expand. It’s competitive out there. Being able to offer your producers to customers is definitely a benefit. You’re seeing independents importing directory themselves now.

”The market’s not like it was 30 years ago when you could just do one thing, people have had to diversify.”
