D Wetherspoon has pulled out of plans to open a £2m Lloyds No 1 bar at Brighton Marina in East Sussex.

The company said: "We will not be opening up at the marina at the moment. The decision has been made purely on a commercial basis.

"We are committed to Brighton and Hove as things are happening in the city and we are looking to open more pubs and a Lloyds No 1 bar but we don't think the marina is the right place at this time.

"We had not signed a deal on the units, just made a commitment in principle."

Magistrates had already granted a licence for the outlet, which was to have been called The Watermark.

Dave Day, the owner of the Golden Lion Group, which opened a bar at the marina two weeks ago, said: "There was room for both of us at the marina. I am sorry Wetherspoon has decided not to join us."
