St Austell Brewery plans to introduce apprentices into all its managed pubs this year.

Working in association with Truro and Cornwall Colleges over the past two years, the brewery now offers apprenticeship training in hospitality, cookery, business and admin.

Director of eople, Jackie Scarfe said: “Apprentices are so much more than they used to be. We can now offer defined career routes for youngsters of all abilities, including many who now see an apprenticeship as a preferred alternative to university. Some of our apprentices finishing this year and then going through our management program could potentially be running £1m businesses in 4-5 years’ time and earning extremely competitive salaries!”

One of the key areas the new apprenticeship scheme addresses is the worldwide shortage of chefs.

Scarfe said: “It is paramount to our business that we have a pipeline of young talent coming up through the ranks to fill the demand for top quality chefs across the wider estat’. Another area in which the Company is looking at developing youngsters for a long term career is within their pub and hotel estate in front line roles. The ‘front of house’ training offered through their Apprenticeship Program is specifically designed to offer a number of career paths moving forward within the hospitality industry and covers a breadth and depth of training from customer service, through to managing strategic direction of a business including finance and marketing.”
