Peach Pubs has opened strongly post lockdown with its 19-strong portfolio reporting an “outstanding” first two trading weeks, as well as a search for new pubs and a raft of new initiatives focused on people, service and sustainability.

Peach reported £725k and £690k of sales in weeks one and two across all its pubs outside only, which is 131% up in like for like sales vs the equivalent Easter weeks in 2019.

One town centre pub with only 18 outside covers did £12k, profitably, while another pub did its all-time record week of £65k, beating its previous £50k record, well over 250% like-for-like.

Peach MD Hamish Stoddart said: “We opened all our 19 pubs on 12th April, because at Peach we never want to leave any of the team behind.

“We didn’t lose any of our team in lockdown, and when we worked out only one pub looked like a big loss-maker in April, we decided every one of our team deserved a chance to work, to serve their community, to make our guests’ lives Peachy.

He said Peach was ideally situated outside London to benefit from all the macro trends of working from home, digital and data and outside eating. “Of course, the main issue is doing this volume beautifully,” he said.

During the year the company introduced learning tool Planet Peach, mobile pay app Pepper and partnered with CPL on team development.

Stoddart said the company had cleared all landlord, government, creditor and supplier debt and has the continued support of bankers, HSBC UK who have facilitated CBILS loans of £2.25m.

Peach has retained Tom Cormie of Fleurets in its for three or four new pubs to acquire over the next nine months.

While 96% of its staff have stayed with the company, its Australian team members have largely returned home leaving some vacancies at the Sunday Times Best Companies to Work For winner.

Stoddart added: “All in all, Covid has been a blessing for Peach. They say ‘Never Waste a Crisis’. We didn’t, we are in a great position to take full advantage of pent-up demand for great service, a happy team, awesome food and drink and are 100% confident of even greater success and profitability in the next quarter.”
