Leading figures in the late-night sector have welcomed the announcement that the Night Tube will begin on 19 August.

Mayor of London Sadiq Khan said the Night Tube was “absolutely vital to my plans to support and grow London’s night-time economy - creating more jobs and opportunities for all Londoners”.

The service will run through the night on Fridays and Saturdays and will apply to the whole of the Victoria and Jubilee lines; the Central line between Ealing Broadway and Loughton/Hainault; the Piccadilly line between Cockfosters and Heathrow Terminal 5 and the Northern line, except on the Mill Hill East and Bank branches.

Alan D Miller, chairman of The Night Time Industries Association, said: “The announcement that the Night Tube will run on Central and Victoria lines from 19 August is terrific news. Making London a truly 24 hour city is key to ensuring we retain our global position and having a future oriented capital. This will mean that from the late summer, people will be able to enjoy after theatre meals and drinks without rushing off, visit some of their favourite areas to socialise and dance and dispersal times will be speedy and efficient.

“TFL has made some financial predictions as to how it will benefit the Night Time Economy, although we happen to think they are quite conservative.

“It is fantastic news for everyone - although we must ensure that as we get to have 24 hour transport, there are still some of our world class leading nightclubs, bars and events to go to - and that more 24 hour licenses are granted to make up for so much of London’s recent losses.”

Steve Ball, co-founder of the Columbo Group, said: “The Night Tube finally beginning is wonderful news and a huge step in the right direction for London’s night time economy. Well done to all those who have worked so hard to make it happen. “
