The freehold of The Griffin, one of Bristol’s oldest and most established gay-friendly pubs, has been sold to Stephen Allcock of London-based Euphorium Bakers, for an undisclosed sum, with offers in the region of £295,000 sought. The pub has been let to experienced bar manager John Ashby who plans to refurbish the pub and establish it as a Real Ale venue, as well as providing live music entertainment. Christie & Co, the property agency, handled the disposal. The Euphorium Bakery owns and operates four sites in Belsize Park, Chapel Market, South End Road and Upper Street in London. Situated in a highly prominent corner site in the city centre, this iconic three-storey, Grade II-Listed building features a 50-cover main circular bar, an upper-level snug area with seating for approximately 20, and a private function room and triangular balcony on the first floor. The property also benefits from a three-bedroom owner’s accommodation on the top floor. Separately it has also been revealed that the bakery operator is planning an ambitious expansion programme. Andrew Green, Euphorium Bakery’s operations director, told British Baker the company would soon be adding its sixth site, the biggest so far, is set to open on Threadneedle Street in October. The group is also looking at adding franchisees in other UK regional cities.
