Jonathan Downey, the bar entrepreneur, has taken a further step away from the high street bar sector with the sale of his remaining Match Bar site in London’s West End. The site, which was opened 12 years ago, has been acquired by an unnamed consortium that will to continue operating under the Match Bar name and as a cocktail bar concept. The sale of the site leaves just the Match Bar in Melbourne from the what was once a five-strong estate, which included a further two sites operating under the brand in London, plus a further outlet in Ibiza. Downey, who recently closed his Tiny Robot restaurant and bar in Farringdon, currently operates the restaurant and bar Giant Robot in Clerkenwell, the Redhook restaurant in Farringdon, the Danger of Death bar on Brick Lane, and the closed East Room in Shoreditch. It is thought that Downey, who runs the Rushmore Group, is looking to concentrate on the private member’s club side of his business going forward, which currently comprises the Milk & Honey sites in Soho and New York, The Player also based in Soho; and The Clubhouse hotel in Chamonix, France. Property advisor Cedar Dean Gilmarc advised Downey on the sale of the West End Match Bar.
