Deltic Group saw turnover rise 8% in the year to February with the company seeing returns from its increased spend on entertainment.

Group finance director Russell Margerrison told MCA that trading in recent months had followed a strong Christmas and New Year period, where there was a 5.9% increase.

He said: “The pattern has continued in that we’re seeing really strong weekend trade but weekdays are holding their own. The only negatives have come from the bad weather in the north of England and the timing of Valentine’s Day.”

The announcement comes in the week Deltic swept the board at the Publican Awards – taking home Best Late Night Operator, Responsible Retailer of the Year and Best Operations Team.

Chief executive Peter Marks said the 58-strong company’s strong performance proved that despite the ONS deciding to remove nightclub admissions from its basket of goods and services, the alte night sector could still thrive.

Deltic’s chief executive Peter Marks said: “Despite recent speculation, clubs aren’t dying; they’re evolving and demand for well run, refurbished venues is strong. Just like bars and restaurants, clubs have had to adapt to survive and, whilst entry fees have remained consistent over the last five years premium drinks packages, pre-bookable booths, world class DJs and live entertainment, together with admission fees, are all key trends that are continuing to grow sales.

“The late night sector is an important part of any city or town’s economy; I have yet to discover a centre that is better off for being a ghost town after dark. We certainly welcome Boris Johnson’s review into the late night market in London and his support for the sector.”

Over the last 12 months, The Deltic Group has increased entertainment spend by 50%, with clubs attracting a range of world class DJs and celebrities to headline key nights.

“Clubs are unique, in that they offer a big night out experience that you can’t get anywhere else. Well invested venues that engage well with their customers on social channels and provide a premium night out will continue to prosper,” said Marks.

Deltic also confirmed plans to invest over £3m refurbishing sites in Nottingham and Stevenage together with the launch of a new PRYZM club in Birmingham.
