Around 871,000 UK adults plan to retrain over the next three years to join the leisure sector as part of the 23% of the population who plans to change career following re-training.

Finance specialists Pay4Later has found that over the next three year 10.9 million people intend to retrain so they can start a new job and plan to spend on average £8,500 doing this.

Only 14% of the group looking to retrain said changing career won’t cost them anything.

Workers in London were found to be most likely to want to retrain in the next three years with around 38% of adults in the capital saying they want to learn new skills.

Wales is the area least likely to retrain with just 16% of adults there saying they will expand their skills set in the next three years.

Scott Law, chief executive of Pay4Later said: “There are so many job opportunities open to people today, but often to realise their dreams they have to train and pass professional qualifications, which can come with a financial cost. Our platform of lenders enables organisations to offer financial support to their students or employees.”

The peak age group for retraining or starting new courses is 18 to 24-year-olds – around 48% say they will retrain to start a new job in a new industry. This is closely followed by 35 to 44 year olds with 39% of this group saying they are also considering retraining by 2018.
