UK consumers are spending more on alcoholic drinks than this time last year, according to the annual Family Expenditure survey from the Office of National Statistics. Customers are spending on average £1.30 each extra a week on alcohol taking the total to £15.30, including off-sales - a total extra spend of £67.60 per person a year.

Pubs should benefit from increased trade with inflation and unemployment low, but with the average family income up by £23 a week, most publicans are also paying staff more than they did a year ago. The full findings of the survey will be released at the end of November.
