The Federation Brewery has relaunched Samson Smooth, after buying the brand from Interbrew.

Vaux Brewery first produced the famous North East beer for the steelworkers on Teesside.

It was withdrawn from the market two years ago after the closure of the Vaux brewery and remained dormant under the ownership of Whitbread, now Interbrew.

Federation will target pubs and clubs in the North East and Yorkshire with the reborn brew.

The relaunch coincides with the launch of a new promotional brochure which voices Federation's longer-term aim.

It says that as a co-operative owned by the clubs it supplies, unlike many other brewers, it cannot be bought out, taken over or asset-stripped. It will become a leading supplier to the drinks industry, its brand owners and retailers, the brochure says.

Meanwhile another Vaux brew, Double Maxim, is celebrating its 100th birthday with 300,000 individually numbered limited edition bottles to mark the occasion
