The number of preliminary offers being put together for Scottish & Newcastle Retail when it is auctioned off now totals at least 15, according to the Financial Times this morning.

Bids are expected from all the usual suspects, including the private equity firms Kohlberg, Kravis, Roberts; Blackstone Group; CVC; BC Partners, Cinven; and Permeira.

Guy Hands's Terra Firma and Hugh Osmond's Sun Capital will also look at the sale, and trade buyers who will ask to look at the books include Mitchells & Butlers and Laurel Pub Co.

Both London's two family brewers, Fuller Smith & Turner and Young & Co, have said that while they could not buy the whole estate they would be interested in "cherry-picking" parts of it if the opportunity arose.

The information memorandum will be sent out before the end of the month, according to the FT, and after initial bids are received three to four bidders are expected to be taken through to the second round to conduct due diligence. S&N is then likely to move to preferred bidder status with one party.
