Whitbread's Liquid bar in Newcastle has had its application for a late licence thrown out because of increasing violence in the city. The bar in Bigg Market wanted a public entertainment licence allowing music and dancing until midnight during the week and 10.30pm on Sundays.

Newcastle has 160 pubs and 16 nightclubs within just one square mile and residents have mounted a campaign to cut the number of late licences. Whitbread said it was disappointed because rejection was based not on the reputation of Liquid but on concerns about the surrounding area. The company plans to talk with police and the local authority before deciding whether or not to appeal.
