Pubs and bars in the United Kingdom must now ensure they display the price of soft drinks, after a new law came into effect yesterday. According to the new law, pubs and bars must clearly display their range of soft drink prices, while restaurants must also show drinks prices with the menu at or near their entrance. Gerry Sutcliffe, the consumer minister, said in a statement: "All consumers should be able to go for a drink or a meal without worrying about any nasty surprises when the bill arrives. "These new laws are a positive step forward for everyone involved, clearly spelling out what consumers can expect and the industry should provide." In addition, outlets that accept payment in foreign currencies will have to display any additional costs, for example commission and handling charges. Operators who do not comply with the new laws could be fined.
