James H Porter, the leased pub chain run by Scottish & Newcastle Pub Enterprises, is about to become the biggest of its kind with the opening of its 50th outlet late next month in Colchester.

The chain, now five years old and named after the man who invented Newcastle Brown Ale, is designed to be "traditional" community locals with a traditional" landlord and landlady at the hub, but "premium design features" and a broad target market.

S&N says pubs converted to the style have seen an average sales increase of 90% after investment. It is looking for more conversions in suburban and metropolitan areas nationwide, with a minimum of 1,800 sq ft or trading area.
