Highland Spring natural mineral water may be forced to change its name because of a European directive that prevents “false claims” on labels. The water for Highland Spring is actually taken from the Ochil Hills in Perthshire, just on the other side of the Highland Fault, which separates the lowlands from the highlands. The area is known locally as the “highland springs”. Perth and Kinross Council have the task of enforcing the regulations and are currently considering what action to take. Highland Spring is the UK’s second-favourite bottled water brand behind Evian, and is owned by the al-Tajir family from Dubai. Coca-Cola is rumoured to be considering a £500m bid for the company.
