Guinness has added to profit growth at food and drinks conglomerate Diageo according to the company's interim financial report published last week. For the six months ending December 31, 1999, total beer volume was up 1%, with Guinness volume up 2%.

Beer sales experienced another period of strong operating profit growth, up 14%. However, the company admitted reducing stock levels in the United States where, according to press reports, US barmen are not experienced in caring for and drawing the beverage. The reduction had adverse impact on shipments the company said.

In Great Britain, the Guinness brand achieved

market share gains and volume growth was driven by marketing campaigns particularly around the Rugby World Cup. Guinness Great Britain saw volumes grow by 5%, driven predominantly by the launch of Guinness Extra Cold.
