Coffee roastery and café Red Roaster has launched an £80,000 crowdfunding campaign to develop garden space at its Brighton home.

The speciality coffee house is currently being renovated under owners Michelin Star winning chef Matt Gillan and restaurant consultant Mike Palmer, who will run evening service at the site under the name Pike & Pine.

Gillan and Palmer have launched the Kickstarter campaign to help secure outside space, which will be used for a kitchen harden and outside dining area.

The investment will also go towards improving the roastery, which is currently at capacity.

Gillan, who held a Michelin Star at The Pass restaurant at the South Lodge Hotel in West Sussex for five years, said the plan was to create “the world’s best café”.

He said: “Our vision for the garden is to create a focal point at the back of Red Roaster with an area that merges indoors and outdoors. An indoor garden/outdoor restaurant. All contained within a beautiful atrium/conservatory.

“By purchasing the additional garden space, it will enable us to create an unprecedented outdoor area within the city. At one end will be the restaurant area, leading into a kitchen garden. This will be used to add interest to the dinner offer at Pike & Pine. We would also look to put a preparation kitchen in the space, which would serve the ‘secret garden’ bar and dining area. We want to create a magical outdoor space in the heart of Kemptown.”
