A protest against Diageo’s plans to axe 900 jobs attracted over 20,000 people yesterday in Scotland. The march, which was led by trade union Unite and backed by the ruling Scottish National Party, was held in Kilmarnock in Ayrshire where the company’s Johnnie Walker whisky bottling plant is located. The protest follows an announcement by Diageo that it plans to close the Kilmarnock plant together with its Port Dundas grain distillery in Glasgow. The drinks giant said that it was open to any alternative plans and will offset the closures with 400 additional jobs at its Fife packaging plant.
