Castle Eden Brewery has changed its name to Camerons Brewery after buying the old Cameron's Lion brewery in Hartlepool from Wolverhampton & Dudley Breweries.

Castle Eden started as a management buy-out from Whitbread of the Castle Eden brewery in County Durham. Last year Wolves sold it the Hartlepool brewery as part of an exercise to raise cash to return to shareholders, and brewing of all Castle Eden beers was transferred to Hartlepool in December.

The Lion brewery was founded in 1852, and first leased to John William Cameron in 1873. Cameron finally bought the brewery in 1893. From 1974 it went through three changes of ownership before being acquired by Wolves.

David Soley, managing director of Castle Eden, said: "It is our aim to build Camerons into a successful and respected independent regional brewery based in the North East of England.

"We will actively look to acquire pubs in the region while strengthening our position in the free trade market and extending the distribution of our core brands, Camerons Strongarm, Castle Eden Ale, Trophy Special and Scorpion Lager."

The old Castle Eden brewery site has been granted planning permission for housing development, with the core brewery buildings to be turned into flats.
