The Midlands subsidiary of Caledonian Heritable has bought a block of 24 pubs, clubs and hotels from the family firm Westbourne Leisure for £16m. It beat off six other bidders for the properties, 15 proprietary clubs, seven pubs and two 2-star hotels, which were marketed by the Birmingham office of Fleurets. Caledonian Heritable, which is based in Edinburgh, runs 300 pubs, mostly leased and mainly in town centres. Peter Ellis, managing director of the group's Calco Midlands subsidiary, said the company was keen to do similar deals: "We have the funds available to purchase more of the same in the Midlands as a whole." The sale includes The Royal Hotel in Sutton Coldfield, The Coach Hotel in Coleshill, the Waterloo Hotel in Smethwick, Canley Social Club in Coventry, and Cloisters Cafe Bar in Coleshill. Westbourne Leisure is a family run business developed by Pat Owens. Owens' son Paul, who is a director of the company, said: "My dad decided to sell in order to give him the security. He is nearly 63 and he wanted to step back and spend more time with my mum Mary." Owens ran his first pub, The Greenway Arms in Small Heath 35 years ago, and bought his first club, the Aston Social Club, 12 years ago.
