The ALMR has welcomed speculation that designated smoking rooms could be allowed as part of new smoking regulations. Nick Bish, chief executive of the ALMR, said: ‘‘Most pubs already have non-smoking areas and a rapidly growing proportion are completely smoke-free. We still believe that the market can deliver what customers and staff want without legislation; but if the government is still intent on legislating it must give us time to actively manage smoking out of our estates. "With time and ‘smoking carriages’ we can become smoke-free without the destruction of some of the most historic and community-focused parts of our industry." Clarification of the government’s proposed smoking legislation is expected this week.
