An Italian barman has made the world's biggest cup of cappuccino, with 500 litres (110 gallons) of espresso coffee and 1,000 litres of steamed frothy milk.

The barman, Ettore Diana, spent all day in Verona, Italy making the giant cappuccino in a 7ft 6in high cup, with the help of 160 people and dozens of espresso machines. It beat the previous record, set by two barmen in Indiana in the United States, by 400 litres.

Diana, who already holds the records for the world's biggest cup of tea and the world's biggest cocktail, said proceeds from the event would be donated to children with Down's Syndrome.
