Another prominent health campaigner has criticised the Government’s Responsibility Deal with businesses, saying that regulations such as a soft drinks tax or a pre-watershed ban on adverts for ‘junk food’ would be more effective.
The Guardian quotes Dr Tim Lobstein, director of the International Association for the Study of Obesity, saying that the Responsibility Deal is a “valuable opportunity for industry to play for time”.
“It leads mainly to tinkering at the edges of the food supply. It doesn’t really change the overall environment.”
He made a comparison with the tobacco industry, saying it would be “unheard of” for that industry “to be sitting round the table”.
