The Independent carries a major feature on a so-called crisis in French haute cuisine. The article argues that traditional haute cuisine is no longer profitable anywhere in the world. Customers no longer want to linger for hours over very expensive meals, are not so impressed by Michelin stars and prefer cheaper, quality food served with fewer frills.

Several restaurants in both France and the UK have decided not to compete for Michelin stars and the circulation of the Michelin guide has reputedly fallen by more than half.
