Subway, the global sandwich chain, will open its 2,000th site in UK & Ireland before the end of this year and believes there is scope to double that number over time, M&C Report has learnt.
New head of Subway UK & Ireland Greg Madigan told M&C Report that the brand will open over 250 sites in total in the UK & Ireland this year and expects to achieve a similar figure in 2015. It is also set to start looking to ramp up its presence in transport hubs.
The company is also looking to develop an online ordering app for next year.
Madigan said: “There is still plenty of opportunity for expansion here and we continue to be approached by new corporate partners and local entrepreneurs looking to be involved with the brand. Currently 80% of our trade is focused on lunchtime so there are also opportunities for us to develop our offer around through other day parts.”
The brand is overseen by 20 regional development agencies in the UK & Ireland and currently 12% of its estate is operated with corporate partners.
Earlier this summer, Subway appointed Madigan as its new area development manager for UK & Ireland to oversee further growth in the region, after Trevor Haynes was promoted to global director of restaurant operations.
Haynes, who is now based out of New York, had overseen the brand’s growth in the UK since August 2009. He was previously territory manager for Subway in Queensland, Australia. Fellow Australian Madigan has more than a decade of experience with Subway.
A full interview with Madigan will feature in M&C Report’s January issue.
