Paul, the patisserie and coffee chain, is to increase its presence in the US with the opening of its first stores in the capital, Washington DC, later this year.

The company’s first Washington DC site will open on 2nd May and will be in one of the city’s prime retail/restaurant locations, 801 Pennsylvania Ave.

The 3,220sq ft, 50-cover site, will feature outdoor terrace seating and its doors will open onto the plaza of the US Navy War Memorial, and directly across from the National Archives.

A second US Paul will open in Georgetown later this year.

The company opened its first US store in Florida in conjunction with the Miami-based Apety Group over five years ago, and currently operates from four sites in the State.

The chain, which is owned by France’s Groupe Holder, a fourth-generation family business, currently operates nearly 500 outlets across 25 countries, including Bahrain, Holland, Japan, Spain, Qatar and the UK.

The Paul brand, which was launched in the UK at Covent Garden in 2000, currently operates 27 sites in London, with a 28th set to open on the Strand later this year.

Paul UK appointed James Fleming, the former operations director at Pizza Express, as its new chief executive last November and mooted plans to open 50 outlets over the next four years in London.
