Spirits manufacturers are adding a secret ingredient to their leading brands to help trap pubs, clubs and restaurants which substitute cheaper drinks.

They have devised an additive which can be detected by a simple dipstick test.

Up to one in ten landlords and restaurant bosses are feared to be refilling empty bottles of well-known brands with lower-quality ones.

Motorists could also be pushed over the drink-driving limit by being served spirits with a higher alcohol content smuggled in from the Continent.
