A study conducted in Finland, the world's heaviest coffee consuming country, has provided further evidence showing regular consumption of coffee could help to ward off diabetes. The national Public Health Institute in Helsinki said it had recorded a 29% decrease in risk of diabetes in women who consumed three to four cups of java daily. In men drinking a similar amount, the risk was lowered by 27%. Researchers also noticed that the protective effect of coffee increased with consumption. Finns drink an average of nine cups of coffee a day, and have a per capita consumption of 24lb annually. The findings tally with several other recent studies into the anti-diabetic qualities of coffee.
