Contemporary US branded outlets are the biggest growth leaders in the UK QSR space according to data collected by Lumina Intelligence.

QSR is a beneficiary of a slight decline in restaurant outlet growth, driving a shift towards convenient and low-ticket solutions, according to Lumina.

Lumina’s Operator Data Index shows top performers in the fast-food segment when it comes to predicted outlet growth this year included Popeyes, Wendy’s, Wingstop and Shake Shack.

These brands are achieving growth as a result of high-quality differentiated alternatives to traditional fast-food players, analysis showed.

Fried chicken chain Popeyes, which made its UK debut in 2020 is expected to lead outlet growth among QSR brand’s, more than doubling its sites through its franchise format.

Wendy’s is also expected to see an outlet increase of 82%, with Wingstop set to grow by 50%, driven by physical expansion into retail parks and high street locations.

In the restaurant segment, a slight decline in outlet growth predicted was driven by a drop in mid-market casual dining.

This can be seen in an expected 3.8% decline in outlets for restaurant chain Pizza Hut.

With consumers looking for new and specialised offerings, these legacy chains need to adapt to survive with strategic initiatives, says Lumina,

Top performers are achieving significant expansion through an accessible price point and appealing offering, with Slim Chickens expected to grow its estate by 50% through targeting retail and leisure locations.

The fried chicken concept has entered strategic partnerships with Haven Holiday parks, as well as Sainsbury’s, which offers consumers an elevated eat in and takeaway experience while shopping.

Flat Iron is also forecast to see 50% growth, with its offering of high-quality steak and affordable pricing which bridges the gap between exclusivity and value.
