The US could soon overtake France as the world’s biggest wine market, suggests The Business. However, the US still lags its rival with 2.53bn litres last year compared with 4.2bn litres annual consumption in France. The Business reports how French consumption of wine has slumped to 55 litres a head a year with only 30% of French men now drinking wine every day against the backdrop of a switch to water and soft drinks. A study of household consumption published this month found only 62% of respondent drank wine. One million are said to have stopped drinking wine in the past five years. The Business 25/09/05 page 7
